Space...The Final Frontier

Picture
In many ways, this statement holds true in education.  Technological advances require a fundamental shift in educational practice.  As students can now nearly instantly access information that was once memorized, higher level thinking skills become increasingly important.  NuLink teachers ask, “What do you want to do with the information you have?”

Allowing students space and autonomy in the educational process is more important than ever before.  Teachers and texts are no longer the sole sources of information in the classroom.  Giving students the opportunity and freedom to interact with information in a medium and style of their choosing is critical to an educator’s success.  NuLink instructors frequently expand the concept of space to assessment by allowing students to choose how they demonstrate their understanding.

From Tommy's Point Of View

“One of the things I like best about my school is that my instructors give me space.  We have as many projects and assignments as I did at my old school, but now my projects are my projects.  It was a little weird at first, having the freedom and time to design my own projects, but once I got used to the freedom and responsibility that goes with it, I really got into it.  I can pick topics that interest me and hook up with people all over the planet who know tons of stuff about what I’m interested in.   Not only do I get into it, but my classmates do a lot of cool stuff too.  It’s weird how we always start with the same directions and come up with such different products.  It’s fun to teach your teachers as much as they teach you!”
