NuLink Charter School is the creation of four Doctoral students at Drexel University.  Daniel Berra, Mary Klinger, Rebecca Lorfink, and Paul Steigerwald are participating in the Educational Leadership program in the winter of 2010.  NuLink is the result of numerous conversations and a great deal of research on the ways technology is changing our world and education.  As traditional educators, we have been required to step outside of our own mental models and imagine how schools must adapt to meet the ever evolving needs of students living in a digital age.  We are not quite ready to abandon face to face instruction completely for all students, as we have all seen children that do not respond well to this type of environment.  NuLink allows for individual flexibility by holding courses in several formats to meet student needs.  This is incorporated with a heavy infusion of technology, while students have more flexibility in how they demonstrate mastery of material.  The focus is on application and analysis of content, not mere memorization and multiple choice exams.

Although NuLink only exists in our imaginations, through this process we have learned ways that technology can, and must, become ingrained in education for the future.  Today’s secondary schools need to think outside of traditional schedules, grades, and credits and move towards a model of individualized learning and creativity.  We all have seen this need and plan to move our own schools toward a new model for the future to the benefit of all of our students.
